How to Schedule Bluesky Posts (Bluesky Has No Scheduler, Here's the Fix)

October 26, 2026 · 3 min read

Bluesky has no built-in scheduling. Here's how to schedule Bluesky posts and threads safely with an app password, plus what makes posts travel there.

Bluesky doesn't have a built-in way to schedule posts. To post at a set time without being online, you need a third-party scheduler that connects through Bluesky's open protocol. The safe way to connect one is with an app password: a separate password you create in Bluesky's settings that you can revoke at any time without changing your main login.

Key takeaways

  • Bluesky has no native scheduling, so use a scheduler connected with an app password, never your main password.
  • Posts max out at 300 characters, with up to 4 images of 1 MB each.
  • Add alt text to every image. Bluesky's culture expects it, and it makes your images searchable.
  • Links need to be formatted properly to be clickable. A good scheduler handles this for you.
  • Threads (reply chains) are the way to say more than 300 characters.

Step 1: Create an app password

In Bluesky, open Settings → Privacy and security → App passwords and create a new one. Give it a name you'll recognize, like the scheduler's name. Bluesky shows the password once, so paste it into your scheduler straight away. If you ever stop using the tool, delete the app password and its access ends immediately, while your real password stays untouched.

Never paste your main Bluesky password into a third-party app. An app password exists precisely so you don't have to.

Step 2: Connect Bluesky to your scheduler

In Tesselith, add Bluesky as a channel with your handle and the app password. It works for accounts on bsky.social and for self-hosted servers too. Once it's connected, Bluesky posts sit on the same calendar as Instagram, Threads and Mastodon.

Bluesky limits you'll run into

WhatLimit
Text per post300 characters
ImagesUp to 4 per post, 1 MB each
Image typesJPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP
Alt textPer image. Strongly recommended.
LinksClickable only when formatted as a link facet

300 characters is tight. It's the shortest limit of any major network. If your post also goes to Threads (500) or Instagram (2,200), write a Bluesky-specific version rather than truncating the long one. Tesselith's composer flags the overflow as you type, and the free character counter shows every network's limit side by side.

Why some scheduled Bluesky links aren't clickable

Bluesky doesn't detect links in plain text the way other networks do. A clickable link has to be sent with extra formatting data (a 'facet') that marks where the link starts and ends. Tools that skip this step publish URLs as dead text. Tesselith adds the formatting automatically, so links work the same as when you post from the app.

Scheduling a Bluesky thread

For anything longer than 300 characters, write a thread: an opening post and a chain of replies. Make the first post strong enough to stand alone, and number the rest if order matters ('2/5'). In Tesselith, follow-up replies are scheduled with the opening post and published in order after it, so the whole thread lands at once.

What works on Bluesky

  • Write like a person. Bluesky's audience is wary of brand-speak. Plain, specific, slightly opinionated posts do best.
  • Use feeds, not hashtags. Discovery runs through custom feeds built around topics. Find the feeds in your niche and post the kind of thing they pick up.
  • Always add alt text. It's expected, it's accessible, and posts without it get called out.
  • Reply generously. Conversations travel further than broadcasts, especially early on.
  • Don't auto-cross-post the same text everywhere. Bluesky users notice a post that was obviously written for somewhere else.

When to post on Bluesky

Bluesky's busiest hours follow North American and European working days, from the late morning to the evening in US Eastern time. If your audience is elsewhere, measure your own: post at varied times for two weeks and compare engagement per post. Our best time to post tool gives a starting point for each network.

Bluesky pairs naturally with Mastodon, since both reward a less polished, more conversational voice. If you're posting to the open social web generally, read our guide to Mastodon for brands next.

Yes, if you use an app password rather than your main password. You can revoke an app password at any time in Bluesky's settings, and access ends immediately.
